We offered online a group “Digital Detox” which is essentially a 24-hour fast from all electronic devices. This is an opportunity to connect with yourself, and your immediate surroundings for 1 day and night. If you can’t leave your device, we recommend at least refraining from using social media, or news related apps for the day.
This mini retreat will begin Friday March 11th, at sunset, and go until Saturday March 12th at sunset. We’ll have a 30 minute zoom meeting at either end, to meditate together, share tips, and share experiences afterwards.
If you are interested in hosting your own digital detox, here’s what we wrote for our introduction and guidelines to the program:
Tonight we begin a short reintroduction to our ever-present selves. First, a deep thank you to our phones, who keep us connected, organized, informed. And to our computers, who keep us employed, creative, and independent. We will begin with a short zoom meeting and then let our dear friends sleep, while we take a step back from all the airwaves and settle into our direct surroundings and the environment within. We hope this will be as refreshing as it is insightful.
Guidelines for a succesful fast:
Inform employers and co-workers that you will be offline
Inform distant family members as well
Place devices out of direct sight
If unable to be completely off phone, remove social media and news apps from your phone for the duration of the fast. Turn off sound and vibration notifications if possible.
If unable to be completely off computer, use these links to block unfruitful websites like facebook and media outlets on Chrome and Safari
